These are Cardiff buildings and architecture, designed by William Burges.

Breif History

William Burges was a noteable British gothic revival architect who establish his own practice of architecture in 1856, his work and contributions produced hy High Anglicans and Roman catolics including the third Marquess of Bute and the first Marquess of Ripon at Studley Royal Yorks.

Notable Architecture:

  • Castell Coch
  • Cardiff Castle
  • Pierhead building
  • Animal Wall

Why do I like his work and what does it mean to me?

I like his work because of how he has a personal connection to me, because of his contribution to both the city I live in (Cardiff) and the Island I go to every summer (The Isle of Bute) and how much deication to the man who’s essentially the face of Bute (John the Marcuss of Bute) and how he put Cardiff on the map.

New York Landmarks

  • The Empire State Building
  • The Statue of Liberty
  • The one World trade centre
  • The Flatiron Building
  • The 9/11 Memorial Muesuem
  • The Brooklyn Bridge
  • Ellis Island
  • The Chysler Building

Why do I like them and what do they mean to me?

Ever since I was a child, I always wanted to go to New York and see the unique architecture in the flesh, each landmark tells its own story (e.g The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the french to commenorate their partnership during the revolutionary war , the one world trade centre is the tallest building in New York, however the real story behind it is that it’s a replacement to the original world trade centre that consisted of two tall towers (commonly known as The Twin Towers)

Prospect Tower

On the 7th to the 9th of January, I had my first session of the prospect of our project as part of the Enhancement week.

First, we were given a presentation at prospect house or the old and new ones, for this project we were split into groups of three and this will help you design a modern prospect tower that included the following:

  • Minimal environmental impact
  • An Appreciation of the site context
  • Fully accessible to all
  • Room for at least six people
  • Striking contemporary design
  • Height between 15 and 20 meters
  • Multiple functions

Once we were given our introduction we split up into teams of three and discussed some ideas and started sketching.

Here are my sketches:
