Traffic Lights (8/11/18)

Traffic lights, the rules apply to all road users driver, pedestrians, motorcyclists etc.

Drivers

When the light is red, you stop and wait for the green

When the light turns to Amber, you get ready to drive off.

When the light turns green, first you check to see it’s clear, then drive off.

Pedestrians

When the red man shows you stay where you are and don’t cross until the green man shows

When the green man shows you crossover to other-side, safely.

Why are they here?

There here so that both drivers and pedestrians can make there way somewhere safely, they were also put there by builders and town planners, they were made to create control, to create a safe road environment.

Sure they can be annoying and sometimes depending on the traffic can people late, but they do decrease the risk of an accident or a hit and run.

Do people always obey them?

No not everyone will, drivers who tend to run them are possibly aggressive, in a hurry/emergency, not noticing or possibly under the influence

999 emergency services will be permitted, but only if it’s an emergency.

As for pedestrians they would run past, even if the red man is showing, it’s pretty risky, depending on the kind of driver approaching.

How is it a “Moral and Political actor”?

If you want to make your journey safe and easy with no conflicts or injuries, one of the best things to do is obey all traffic/crossing lights, sure they can be annoying and inconvenient but they do make the roads safer.

Being critical about objects 7/11/18

For this assignment, my task is to create an analysis on one of these three advertisements

Screen Shot 2018-11-04 at 12.35.33.png

The one I’ve chosen is “The Modern chair”

The chair was designed by Charles Eames and built by Herman Miller, The chair advertises what the people want so there demands can be met. So it can fulfill their needs.

The ad shows two pictures of the chair front and back and mentions the people who designed, built and molded it, It also says “Satisfaction guaranteed”.

It also lists ideal uses for it such ass dining, writing, reading, and lounging, the price range is $25.00 and place of manufacture is Young products, department 1117, 2605 Elm Hurst in Detroit, Michigan.

The backrest is bent in the middle to create a curve and create comfort for the back, the bottom part has a downward curve at the top and the legs are black with rubber tips

The ad also says it combines crisp, clean lines and outstanding comfort.

Quote:

“The inverse of the therapeutic premise is that by stressing the body, you can lower your feeling of well-being. The implication for sitting is that a chair that forces you to sit badly has both physical and mental consequences. Since some chairs exact more physical damage than others, a somatic inference is that some will be less depressing and mentally satisfying than others” (Cranz,2000,p.127).

I chose this quote because it shows the opposite of what it’s promising by focusing on the negatives of sitting habits and how it can affect a person physically and mentally and certain comfortability problems could lead to unnecessary bone structure change and complications to the body.

As for the ad it’s trying to drive you away from the negatives and open the door for exciting opportunities

A chair can alter the body if the person sitting on it starts sitting on it in an unusual way creating bad sitting habits these could be necessary if comfortable, but if not it could lead to bad backs, neck pain or even headaches. Another bad habit to avoid is not keeping the chair on all fours and instead of having it balance on the two at the back, this is a really bad habit cause you risk could falling and either seriously hurting yourself or even kill yourself.

Mapping A Meshwork (31/10/18)

For this assignment, my task is to use Ingold’s diagram to create my own inspired diagram on an everyday activity.

The activity I have chosen is my Journey from Home to Penarth Pier

IMG_4411.jpg

First I check the latest bus times for Cardiff, then I pack my backpack and get ready to head out

I then walk all the way down to the stop

I then  wait at the bus stop (The bus would usually arrive a few minutes late)

Next, I would ride the bus, (the ride usually lasts about 41 minutes although depending on the day the bus would get caught in traffic depending on time)

then, I would arrive at Greyfriars Road, Cardiff

Then I walk all the way to the bus stop at Wood Street (I would then catch the latest bus heading there

The journey lasts for about 23 minutes

Then I arrive at Penarth then walk the rest of the way to the pier through the park and forest

Once I arrive at the pier I go to the boardwalk to look at the ocean view then I would go down to sit on the rocks and watch the view and think

Once I’ve had Enough I then make my way back

Then I wait for the next bus into Cardiff

The ride lasts about 23 minutes

Then I arrive at Cardiff, then make my way to my bus stop home (When I arrive I  make sure to check the time so I can make the latest bus back)

I arrive then wait at the stop

The Journey lasts for about 41 minutes

I then arrive at my stop and walk the rest of the way home

21/10/18 Plastic Object Analysis

For this assignment, my task is to write up an analysis on a plastic object (either from last weeks lecture or something of my own)

The Object I have chosen is this water flask

Screen Shot 2018-10-21 at 21.15.56.png

What do I use it for?

I use it when I sit at my desk at home whether I’m studying, crafting or generally chilling out. Occasionally I would also use it when I would go out hiking.

The flask is about 16cm in height and 7.8 cm in width

The color scheme consists of olive green for the flask and black for the cap and ring.

Describe the design

The flask is 16cm tall and can contain about 500 ml of water, on one side it’s curved and on the other, it has a little gap possibly made for someone holding it creating a unique

grip.

The cap screws onto the flask to keep it tight and secure so no water can leak, The ring connects to both the cap and flask, this so the cap can’t get lost.

The Flask also comes with a cover to keep it safe, its color is camouflage green with the word “Army” on it, it has velcro flaps on the top sides to keep the flask in, a string at the back to hang it and a loop at the back so I can attach it to my belt so I can keep it close to me.

Relevant Quote:

“Architecture domesticates limitless space and enables us to inhabit it”

I chose this quote because it kind of relates to the use of this object like if someone uses this for the first time it takes a second or two to observe the shape and its use and eventually become accustomed to it.

17/10/18 How things are: (Is this a face?)

For this Assignment I had to keep an eye out for a certain object, scene of scenery or a piece of artwork that either looks like a face or a person, then describe what I see in it, and explain the details, express views and opinions, use relevant quotes from a famous artists and summarise.

What is my face?

For this I used an Art piece (Carpet) named (Tone in Mint by Catherine Macguuer from the Floor Story exhibition in London), I noticed its facial similarities when I found it on one of my Floor Story,London postcards on my desk, It reminded me a lot of the art stylings of Pablo Picasso because of how he paints people’s faces using unusual shapes, colors and anatomical inaccuracies.

How is it a face?

Relevant Quotes

“If you ask me what the world looks like to me, it looks like a painting by Picasso” (Ernst Gombrich, Perception category)

I chose this quote because the art piece I used shows similarities and reminds me of Picasso’s work and how he paints people were their faces are anatomically inaccurate with gives his work a unique identity.

“The painter must leave the beholder something to guess” (Ernst Gombrich, The Painting category)

I chose this quote because I AM the beholder with something to guess and by looking at this picture with its shapes and pattern I “guessed” it looked like a face, That’s mainly what artists do, they prepare a piece, they make a piece, they finish a piece, they step back and look at it, then they allow the beholder to observe, admire and express views and ideas. Ideas are what create more artists, ideas to explore, create, experience and inspire others. When you’re the artist YOU are in control of how it looks, how it feels, how it surprises, when you make a piece you create a story you decide how begins and how it ends, what the twists and turns are, the difference is you show don’t tell, you let the beholder decide what the story is and that’s what art is one big story.

Both Quotes:

Summarization  (Is this a face? Is the face real? How is it real? Is it an Illusion?)

In a way when we see some pieces of art, technology or even architecture that show some facial similarities it’s kind of a way of reminding us that us humans are the ones who made these things and how we’re the most dominant species on this planet and how we’ve become more evolved, intelligent and civilized than any other Animal and how we evolved and survived through many decades of war, sickness, disease and how we see our selves through the effort and sacrifice we put in to ensure that we would make it so far into a distant future were we’d all make a difference.

Sensography

On the 4th of October, I had a lecture on Sensography, which is the study of the human senses,  this included looking at Philosophies on sight and different cultures who rely on the other four senses and pieces of artwork created by famous artists.

I was also given a few exercises on senses, most notably one where I had to make use of my other senses by smelling, squeezing and hearing what was inside a cup without looking. I also had to examine an item – a stone, by describing its look, weight, and feel. In doing this it made me think about my GCSE art project where I explored the design of shells. This is because these multi-sensory experiences are linked to our memories, feelings, beliefs and other experiences.

Unlike the rest of the presentation, this part allowed us to see more about how people have explored and expressed the human senses through literature, scientific research, and historical philosophies

I learned that there is more to life than just seeing and how the evolution of the world and society around us changed our senses and perception of the world of how we have adapted to rely on our phones and social media rather than face to face communication, which drove us to social distance, social loneliness.

This presentation has helped me as a designer as I will now think about how a user will see a product and what senses they will use to explore it; sight, smell, touch. This will give the user a better understanding of the processes taken to create the product and to understand how it was created. As a designer, it has influenced how I will design products considering the users’ product experience and interaction. It will influence my designing, in future I will consider ‘what do people want?’

4/10/18 (How Things Are Part I)

On the 4th of October, I and my group had our first lecture on “How Things Are”, for this we were shown a slideshow containing Philosophies and Literature on human senses, Art Pieces created by artists expressing interest in the human senses and we even had little challenges to test our other senses

For more information about what I learned, check out my other Blog post containing my Essay on Sensography (https://wordpress.com/post/ewans.art.blog/23)
