17/10/18 How things are: (Is this a face?)

For this Assignment I had to keep an eye out for a certain object, scene of scenery or a piece of artwork that either looks like a face or a person, then describe what I see in it, and explain the details, express views and opinions, use relevant quotes from a famous artists and summarise.

What is my face?

For this I used an Art piece (Carpet) named (Tone in Mint by Catherine Macguuer from the Floor Story exhibition in London), I noticed its facial similarities when I found it on one of my Floor Story,London postcards on my desk, It reminded me a lot of the art stylings of Pablo Picasso because of how he paints people’s faces using unusual shapes, colors and anatomical inaccuracies.

Relevant Quotes

“If you ask me what the world looks like to me, it looks like a painting by Picasso” (Ernst Gombrich, Perception category)

I chose this quote because the art piece I used shows similarities and reminds me of Picasso’s work and how he paints people were their faces are anatomically inaccurate with gives his work a unique identity.

“The painter must leave the beholder something to guess” (Ernst Gombrich, The Painting category)

I chose this quote because I AM the beholder with something to guess and by looking at this picture with its shapes and pattern I “guessed” it looked like a face, That’s mainly what artists do, they prepare a piece, they make a piece, they finish a piece, they step back and look at it, then they allow the beholder to observe, admire and express views and ideas. Ideas are what create more artists, ideas to explore, create, experience and inspire others. When you’re the artist YOU are in control of how it looks, how it feels, how it surprises, when you make a piece you create a story you decide how begins and how it ends, what the twists and turns are, the difference is you show don’t tell, you let the beholder decide what the story is and that’s what art is one big story.

Summarization  (Is this a face? Is the face real? How is it real? Is it an Illusion?)

In a way when we see some pieces of art, technology or even architecture that show some facial similarities it’s kind of a way of reminding us that us humans are the ones who made these things and how we’re the most dominant species on this planet and how we’ve become more evolved, intelligent and civilized than any other Animal and how we evolved and survived through many decades of war, sickness, disease and how we see our selves through the effort and sacrifice we put in to ensure that we would make it so far into a distant future were we’d all make a difference.
