3/10/18 (Stitch Part II)

On the 3rd of October, I and my group continued stitch, for this I had to bring in my own printed out images of shapes that connect together, to do this we had to change the foot in our sewing machines from a regular to a free motion foot in order to do intricate patterns and have more of a free hand to work around the fabric, so I took my image traced it onto my piece of fabric, Next I started going over my pen marks, following the shape and pattern and filling in the big parts, there are a few parts where I go over the lines a few times, however I like how it looks, like its old and handcrafted (in a good way).

2/10/18 (Wood Shop Part II)

On the 2nd of October, I and my group continued with our boxes in the woodshop, I started by cutting off the excess wood off my box on the bandsaw, next, I used a router to cut the edges on the tops of my box, next I cut off the top of my box and sanded the sides of both pieces using a belt sander, for each side I used three types of sandpaper to create smooth quality, after that I used a blow torch to decorate the exterior of the box,

After that, I applied a layer of danish oil on both pieces and left them to dry.

1/10/18 (The Principles of 3D Design)

On the 1st of October I and my group were given a lecture on “The Principles of 3D design, there we were shown various pieces of Art Work based on these principles including Organisation, Hierarchy, proximity, unity, harmony, variety, pattern, modularity, rhythm, motion and emphasis. In the after we were assigned to create a piece based on one of the following principles

I myself chose patterns, so I went to the library and chose two art books to photocopy a page from each.

My Picks:

  • American Art Deco (Alastair Duncan) The Piece- “Manhattan” by Lydia Bush-Brown
  • Creative Knitting, A new artform (Mary Walker Phillips) The Piece- “Illus” Fragment of a turban in alpaca

For my piece I took the photocopy of “Manhattan” and glued thin strips of paper onto one the buildings in the picture, this was so I could recreate the grid pattern like in some parts of the piece.

27/9/18 (Concept Modules)

On the 27th of September, I and my group had a seminar about Constellation 4 Concept Module, where the night before our assignment was to study and choose a total of four concept modules to focus on, each one we will study for a whole term

My Picks:

  • Myth-Making
  • How things are: Practice as Anthropology
  • Learning to look at: The Body
  • After Modernism

26/9/18 (Stitch Part I)

On the 26th of September, I started doing stitch work, first, I and my group were given an introduction and tutorial on how to work the sewing machines, once we were all ready we all grabbed a piece of fabric each and some colored thread, once we were all set up we each practiced sewing stitches on our fabric.

25/9/18 (Metalshop part I)

For the other half of the day, I and my group started working in the metal shop. There we were given tutorials on how to work the equipment correctly and safely. After that we started work on our candle holders, we started by taking two sheets of metal and cutting them into shapes

One circle

The other a square

Then we used a spot welder to weld them together, then we learned how to use a plasma cutter to cut the shapes for our holders.

25/9/18 (Wood-shop Part I)

On the 25th of September, I started working in the workshop. For the first half of the day, I and my group worked in the woodshop, we were given tutorials on how to work the equipment both correctly and safely. Once we were given the instructions we started work on our boxes by measuring the length of our wood and cutting it, then on the tall pieces we created the head and shoulder on the two, once that was done we sanded the edges and proceeded to glue the pieces together and place them on the vice for the glue to settle.

24/9/18

On the 24th of September, it was my first day at Uni (Not counting freshers) for the first half of the day, I and my group had a few seminars/lectures on Elements of 3D design

In the afternoon we were assigned to create 6 pieces each based on the elements of 3D design

In the end, I made 3 1/2  (the 4th one wasn’t finished) The design for each one mainly came from my head as I was making them.
